In an era of change and transition, a piece of history can still be felt, which is why it hurts to find out that Jonathan Anderson has stepped down as the creative director of Loewe. Loewe is a Spanish luxury fashion brand which Anderson is leaving after being the director for 11 years.
Posting on Instagram, he thanked the team for sharing their craft, “I have been lucky enough to be surrounded by people with the imagination, the skills, tenacity and resourcefulness to find a way to say ‘yes’ to all my wildly ambitious ideas.”
Anderson was appointed by the brand in 2013. The company mentions that during his tenure, the brand had exceptional growth and was seen as a pioneer in modernizing luxury fashion. This success led to numerous awards, including Anderson winning Designer of the Year at the Fashion Awards back to back.
Anderson revitalized Loewe back to the forefront of runway fashion. With the brand previously focused on leather goods and accessories, this was a needed refresher. Inspired by the art world, Anderson channeled his kineticism into the brand creating a whole new meaning.
These developments include the tomato bag, comic balloon pump, and toy-like tops, which show Anderson’s ability to blend outside, off-kilter influences into high res fashion. Celebrities such as Zendaya, Anna Wintour, and Ayo Edebiri have worn these outfits which have helped push the brand into commercial heights and media relevance.
Although a sad end, Jonathan Anderson’s contributions to Loewe’s have been enormous, especially increasing the marketability of the brand. It’s clear that Anderson has some big ideas brewing, so wherever or whatever he does next will be a development worth seeing.
