The world of Toronto—sorry, Metropolis, is a world that many comic enthusiasts love returning to. All better when the centerpiece of the fictional city is Superman. A blue collar hero whose optimism has captivated legions of fans for over 80 years. In case you need a refresher – what does it all entail? Answer: a new installment for the long running intellectual property.
James Gunn’s “Superman” is slated to release July 11, 2025—two months away. However, it feels as if we don’t know a lot about the premise of the film. We have seen the multiple trailers of the film showcasing the titular Superman (David Corenswet), Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) and more being seen – albeit through obviously misled editing. I’m a bit confused on what the movie could be about but there are some clues that can help pinpoint Gunn’s intended direction.
The overview states that it’s about Superman embarking on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing – an almost “learn your roots” scenario… There is also a scene from the trailer where Superman saves a little girl from the explosion, ripped straight out of a comic book. Gunn seems committed to honoring the source materials. It’s also exciting seeing Krypto the SuperDog make an appearance—he’s seen more in animated adaptations rather than in live action, so it shows appreciation for the Superman mythology.
Overall, is it a bird? A plane? Yes. It’s Superman down to a T. His suit resembles the New 52 design. Still, it’s curious that James Gunn is spotlighted more than the actors. I’d love to hear more from the cast in the lead-up to release. Either way, we’re two months out—see you in July.
