This feels like the 30th opinion piece I’ve written on the Trump administration. As someone who only became a U.S. citizen last year, is a journalist and keeps hearing stories about immigrants being threatened with citizenship revocation for criticizing Trump, I almost hope they come for me, too.
But in all seriousness, can we take a step back, whether you’re Republican or Democrat, and just look at what’s happening? Donald Trump continues to undermine science, public education and basic facts. His leadership style is marked by disinformation and attacks on experts. And if your only response to this is because Trump believes in religion over science, just know that if Jesus Christ appeared in the U.S. today, he’d probably get deported by Trump, too.
Let’s be clear, this isn’t just about controversial tweets, this is a pattern of behavior that devalues intelligence. The battle between the Trump administration and Harvard University exemplifies that. Trump recently banned Harvard from accepting international students from any outside country because of anti-Semitism threats. The Department of Homeland Security revoked Harvard’s ability to enroll foreign students under the F-1 visa program at the behest of Secretary Kristi.
Among the foreign students at Harvard that will be affected is Princess Elisabeth, the future queen of Belgium, let me repeat that, the FUTURE QUEEN OF BELGIUM, who is pursuing a master’s in public policy there.
So my question is, what is Trump’s deal in trying so hard to make people dumber? He has already attacked the Department of Education countless times; he’s defunding the top universities in the U.S. that attract people from all over the world, and may I say, he himself isn’t the smartest. With a B.S. in economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, you’d think he planned the whole tariff chaos better.
If you look at the statistics, the states that turned red in the last election were also the states with the lowest levels of education. Those who have at least one Bachelor’s degree are overwhelmingly Democrats. College graduates make up 43% of the electorate, and 55% voted for President Harris, according to exit polls from the 2024 election.
As a liberal immigrant woman, I’m honestly just confused. What are the citizens of the U.S. gaining from the attack on education? If anything, the only person winning is Trump by making his voters dumb enough to vote for him.
