As is common knowledge, our government is split into three parts, Judicial, Executive and Legislative. This design philosophy falls under the principle and idea that not one side or person may hold too much power over the other, with each branch being able to make checks and balances with each other to maintain a democracy. However, there is evidence for concerns with the Executive branch as of late, being that it has grown too powerful and out of control.
With how the Executive branch has been operating as of late, it becomes quite apparent that it has outgrown the other two branches in terms of power, with one example being Trump’s rampant tariff executive orders. Political Scientist Abe Newman spoke on the situation, saying that the “Trump Administration overstepped its authority on tariffs. Markets will face even more uncertainty and in the long run it could undermine US national security” on the matter of the US Court blocking a large amount of Trump’s tariffs.
It’s no secret that the President has grown powerful and while not all his policies are going through, checks and balances between the Executive branch have been decreasing at a surprising rate, with the Executive Branch gaining more and more authority. As time goes on, it’s becoming more and more clear that the Executive branch is taking up powers that are usually reserved for the Legislative and Judicial and as we get later into Trump’s presidency, the other branches of the Government could very well be seen losing a vast majority of their Governing functions. According to APNORC, “Overall, 57% of adults feel Donald Trump has gone too far in using presidential power to achieve his goals. About 3 in 10 feel his use of executive powers is about right and 1 in 10 think he’s not using them enough to progress his agenda,” which is a significantly large amount.
