Looking Expensive Can Be Cheap

Summer is here… finally. With this, comes the sea of Instagram posts flaunting all sorts of luxury vacations–the Hamptons, Cape Cod and all of the European coastal destinations. What is highlighted in these curated glimpses, however, is not only scenic views but also beachy and expensive looking outfits.

The “Old Money” hashtag currently has over 1.2 million posts on Tiktok, making it clear that the largest aspirational look for young audiences today is this refined luxury. If one thing reigns true for the 2025 summer is that quiet luxury fashion is back.

Did it ever truly leave, though? Old Money fashion is rooted in the lifestyle of the affluent. It is based in the style of prep schools with polo shirts and linen bottoms, and people have been obsessed with it for, well, forever. But it has gained a specific resurgence in the past few years because of popular influencers and movies, such as Sofia Richie and “Saltburn.” Part of this style’s allure lies in its air of exclusivity, but more affordable fashion brands have quickly caught on to the growing trend.

If you want to dress like you’ve just stepped off the Amalfi Coast, without spending a fortune, focus on capturing the overall aesthetic rather than fixating on specific brands or designer labels.

One core characteristic is an understated elegance. You can achieve this by utilizing neutral tones and structured silhouettes. Ditch the logos and find apparel that you love and can be swapped out no matter the outfit. Brands such as Zara, H&M and Mango have pieces that can help you find this.

Another way to live this look is by incorporating classic staples such as button-downs, loafers and knitwear. Finding fabrics that look high-quality (even if they are not necessarily) is a way to find that aesthetic on a budget. This style also usually focuses on finding pieces that fit well compared to clothes that are oversized or revealing.

The true secret to a quiet luxury wardrobe is styling. It is important to find a balance between being curated but never too try-hard. Keep the accessories minimal and meaningful. Remember that flashy isn’t always better.

At its core, Old Money fashion is less about wealth and more about restraint, confidence and timeless taste. This summer, it’s not about how much you spend but how effortlessly you wear it.
