Why We’re Obsessed With Biopics Right Now

Biopics, films that dramatize the lives of real people, have become a cultural obsession. From stories about politicians to musicians, these movies are dominating the screen. Popularity around recent examples, like “A Complete Unknown” or “Oppenheimer” have shown just how much audiences love these films. Whether its tragedy, success or transformations people just can’t keep their eyes away – but what exactly is drawing us to them so much?

In a world dominated with online personas and utter fiction, people are drawn so much to authenticity. And biopics give us just that – or at least a taste of it. For so long, celebrities and social figures have been seen on a certain pedestal, and biopics peel back a layer to give a glimpse into who these people are. Because these films give a sense of truth, people are able to resonate with and feel connected to real achievement, struggles and flaws.

One thing that sets biopics apart from all other films is that these people are real. Other fictitious stories can mirror real life, but biopics can achieve that on a new level. These people lived and really experienced these events (well kind of).

It’s also fun to have a glimpse into these cultural icons’ lives. Biopics are able to tap into this collective memory and tell stories about events that we sort of know, but now can see from an emotional and different standpoint. These movies allow people to relive these past eras but with the added perspective of hindsight.

Actors also love to star in biopics. That means that these films often attract A-list celebrities as the cast. These actors usually undergo some sort of transformations to perform in these roles, and who doesn’t want to see one of their favorite celebrities act like another one of their favorite celebrities.

In a world oversaturated with filtered realities, it is nice to be able to watch something that resembles our real world. Biopics allow us to connect with the past and understand these famous figures in a different light. Whether the craze is driven by nostalgia or just plain curiously, one thing is true – the obsession with biopics shows no sign of waning. I guess real life really does make the best stories.
