We have always been searching for more ways to create the power we need, from discovering alternative power sources to reimagining the ones we have now. The amount of electricity it takes to power a city like New York is staggering, so Governor Kathy Hochul plans to build a new nuclear plant.
This proposed facility is planned to be constructed in the upstate part of New York and will be advanced enough to function with zero emissions. The idea behind this push is to hopefully create replacement power sources that will take over the fossil fuel power plants that are soon to be deactivated. Not only that, but the plant will create hundreds of high-paying jobs for the increasing number of people who need it.
Of course, some concerns pollute the people and their politicians about the potential dangers and cost of such a facility. There is also the theoretical trouble of nuclear waste and where to dispose of it. Hochul emphasizes that safety will be the number one priority. Nuclear power is by no means harmless but research and development have been extensively done to reduce chances of incidents and containment issues. Nuclear energy has been cited as a safer alternative to fossil fuels, though it is still expensive.
There have not been any announcements about when exactly the power plant will be expected to be built, but Hochul has made it clear that the city’s power is very important to her. There will likely be more talks about this project in the future.
