How Body Glitter became a great safety tool

The recent resurgence of body glitter online has had many of those with beauty and fashion interests flocking to join. Body glitter initially became a popular item during the early 2000s before briefly petering out of pop culture over the years. That said, the item has made a comeback thanks to recent Y2K trends on sites like TikTok and Instagram.

For many, body glitter is one of the many things from the 2000s that is nostalgic of a simpler time; others simply like the aesthetic and how it glitters on skin. Interestingly enough, outside of fashion, female consumers have acknowledged a more practical and effective use for the product on their nights out.

Many female customers have come out to explain that they use body glitter as a safety tool when they’re out with friends. It is due to the unfortunate reality of nonconsensual touching and other physical offences that women have faced in public settings and events.

The National Sexual Violence Resource Center noted that around 81% of women have experienced some form of sexual harassment or assault during their lifetime. For many women, body glitter can act as a deterrent to potential perpetrators from going after them. Additionally, if the assault still occurs, the perpetrators are more likely to be caught due to how difficult glitter in general is to get out of skin, clothing, and even hair.

Body glitter has also proven to be great at detecting whether or not a person’s partner has cheated. While not the most conventional safety tool, body glitter can be a great safe and fun way to give a person some measure of deterrence from those who might cause them harm.
