Most girls have had that moment of finishing up your makeup and wondering: I feel like I’m missing something? Maybe you add a bit more sparkle to your eyelids or refresh that gloss on your lips, but, for me, there’s always one answer to complete the look – more blush. I usually end up looking like I’ve been kissed by a sunburn I didn’t ask for – but for some reason, I absolutely love it.
I’ve been told I have fallen victim to a recent makeup mishap deemed “blush blindness.” It’s a term used to describe when someone doesn’t quite realize they are applying just a little too much blush. Many celebrities, such as Sabrina Carpenter and Hailey Bieber, have been associated with this growing trend due to their infamous rosy cheeks. It’s usually used in a more derogatory way, but I think it’s just the perfect touch for your summer face.
It usually happens when you get used to seeing your face with blush, or you’re working in a dimly lit bathroom, that you don’t realize that perhaps you’ve gone overboard. It has nothing to do with the shade you choose, but the amount applied to your cheeks. For some, it reads as too much, but, for me, it’s just the right amount.
Because, honestly, I see nothing wrong with it. Blush is usually the first part of your makeup that begins to fade, so maybe it seems too much at the house, but when you get to the restaurant? Perfectly sunkissed. We all seem so obsessed with that “no-makeup” makeup look (which is honestly exhausting to keep subjecting to), so over-blushing is kind of like a little act of defiance. Yes, you can see I’m wearing makeup – that’s why I took the time to do it.
And blush is just so cute. Adding a little rosy color gives off a warm and beachy vibe. One that makes you look like you just stepped off the island, even if you’ve spent most of your summer in the office.
The general anxiety of being “too much” taps into a deeper script, one warning women against being attention-seeking or excessive. But who cares? Feeling pretty doesn’t have to mean disappearing into some neutral or minimalistic style, it can be a bold and fun pop of pink.
So yes, maybe it’s not perfect. Maybe it’s a little loud. Maybe it’s too much. But in my eyes, having a bit of “blush blindness” means you aren’t scared of being seen – and you had a little fun in the process.
