Pot Shops Sue New York Over Regulation Error

For the longest time, marijuana use has been a heated topic for Americans. Many people criticize its use for being a gateway drug, while others vouch for its medicinal applications. Regardless of these thoughts and opinions, many cannabis businesses rely on the states that have legalized the substance. Many such shops have recently sued the state of New York for an error that might shut them down.

There are many rules and regulations that these pot shops must abide by if they want to stay open for business. One such rule in place in New York is that weed stores must be at least 500 feet away from the nearest school. Originally, store owners and regulators believed that the way to measure the distance was from the doors of both buildings. However, state officials revealed that the law was being misread and that the school’s property line is where you start to measure the distance. This means that dozens of shops are not far enough away, which will result in them being closed down.

Understandably, this has enraged many businesses that were improperly informed about the regulation, leading to many owners suing the state. New York is allowing these businesses to operate for now, but many of these stores will have to relocate eventually. The state has established a fund to compensate these owners for the inconvenience. There is no telling how far the cases will go for those taking legal action, but it will be very difficult for New York to come out of it unscathed.
