The WNBA playoffs have arrived, and I have not felt so disappointed in regards to the postseason.
This feeling stems from most of the superstar players such as Caitlyn Clark and Angel Reese being unavailable. Whether due to injury or suspension, the fact the big dogs ain’t playing is sad.
The New York Liberty is also dealing with a similar situation. Their star power forward, Breanna Stewart, left Game 1 in overtime due to a left knee injury.
New York Liberty defeated Phoenix Mercury in Game 1 76-69. The Liberty struggled through most of the contest because of their opponents pick and rolls. However, thanks to the Liberty’s defense of Breanna Stewart and Jonquel James plus the team’s clutch offensive production in the 2nd half. The Liberty were able to lead the series 1-0.
Breanna Stewart did finish the game with 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. Not a bad performance but the fact that she may or may not show up for Game 2 is a massive concern.
Phoenix Mercury is looking to tie the series. Plus, after guard Alyssa Thoma’s botched layup at the end. It’s no surprise that Mercury won’t go easy on a potentially depleted Liberty team.
Thankfully, they’ll have their squad led by the offensive willpower of Natasha Cloud and Sabrina Ionescu but the defense will definitely be needed from the rest of the team for Game 2.
Breanna Stewart says she will play for Game 2 but spectators should be weary of her statements. You don’t want to rush her out to play and potentially have her injured for an entire season.
It’s best to keep an eye out on the series but one thing for sure is that Game 2 of the New York Liberty and Phoenix Mercury is looking to be a warzone at the BarClay Center.
