Cheese Boards Are Just Adult Lunchables — and That’s Beautiful

Let’s be honest: cheese boards are just grown-up Lunchables, and I say that with nothing but love.

Think about it: what is a charcuterie board if it’s not a fancier form of a Lunchable? You’ve got little slices of meat, tiny cheeses, crackers or bread and sometimes even some fruit or chocolate. It’s portioned, and it even looks nice. We’re just paying way more for it now than we ever did as kids which honestly proves how much we still love the concept.

Here’s the thing: I’m not mad about it. I love it. I fully support the cheese board lifestyle. In fact, I’ve been indulging in some of my own cheese boards with my husband recently. I just think we need to stop pretending this is anything new. This is simply snack nostalgia with better lighting.

Lunchables were genius, honestly. They let you build your meal the way you wanted. There weren’t any directions on how to eat it, and you didn’t have to reheat it either. I felt like a chef just stacking turkey, cheese and crackers. Charcuterie gives me that same feeling, but now there’s brie and jam involved.

There’s also the nostalgia factor. We love cheese boards not just because they’re tasty, but because they remind us of something simple and fun from our childhoods (but now we’re old enough to drink wine with it).

So yeah, cheese boards are adult Lunchables. Let’s embrace that and stop pretending we invented some new elevated dining experience and just admit we never really grew out of putting together snacks on a tiny plate.

It’s honestly beautiful. There’s nothing wrong with liking the same kind of food you did as a kid. If anything, it means you know what you like, and you’ve figured out how to enjoy it with style.

Call it charcuterie. Call it a cheese board. Deep down, we all know what’s really going on (and it’s delicious).
