A new exhibit centered around fashion is heading to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) this coming spring. While fashion has been deeply intertwined with art and society throughout the ages, there have been far fewer times that fact has been celebrated.
The MET’s Costume Art exhibition is said to be an answer to this problem. The first show will explore costume art throughout history. Following that, the subsequent shows will explore the dressed body and be thematically organized by different body types, including the Naked Body, the Classical Body, the Pregnant Body, and others.
In an interview with the Associated Press, the MET’s director and CEO, Max Hollein, expressed his hope that the exhibition will be able to bring new light to fashion’s impact on art history.
Costume Art will launch at next year’s MET Gala and continue until January 2027 at the Conde M. Nast galleries. This new museum exhibition comes at a time when the fashion industry is pushing its more artistic qualities to the forefront.
Recent months have seen global news companies like CNN incorporate more fashion headlines into their reporting, whether it be increased coverage on runway events or new collaborations. Fashion, like other creative industries, has become increasingly challenging for the general public to engage with or break into.
It is with initiatives like the MET’s newest exhibition that bridges that gap between the industry and the public. Hopefully, if this exhibition proves successful, more museums will add other exhibitions like it and help boost the public’s interest in the industry.
