Do Term Limits Improve the Government or Weaken the Expertise of Politicians?

Term limits have been a core part of our government for centuries. They are a law with a deep history behind it, which has very few exceptions to the rule, typically only during times of great crisis, such as during the World Wars. They serve as a way to prevent the government from being controlled by the same people over decades and allow new perspectives to naturally enter the government that can more accurately portray the desires of the people. However, have term limits weakened the potential expertise of politicians?

One of the biggest arguments against term limits is that it prevents politicians from becoming experts in the field. Without term limits, politicians would be allowed to gather significant experience in the field, which would allow them to better represent American interests both within the country and overseas.

While a lack of term limits may sound appealing to some, I believe they are necessary and should be applied to the most prominent government positions. I am not a political genius; however, I think that having term limits would significantly help the government feel connected to the desires of the American people.

Currently, it feels like American citizens are always the 2nd priority of the United States government, instead keeping their eyes abroad and focused on other countries. It is almost impossible to keep track of how many countries the United States is providing financial and military support to across the world. Out of the 196 countries recognized by the United States government, we are offering aid to 179 of them. The United States is offering aid to over 90% of the countries it recognizes as legitimate. That is an incredible amount of foreign aid, but it raises the question: Is it too much? Have politicians forgotten about the citizens in need of aid in their own country?

Having term limits would allow new politicians to enter the government and better reflect the interests of the citizens of America. It also helps prevent corruption within the government by preventing long-term relationships between lobbyists from forming.

Overall, I think that having term limits is necessary and should be applied on a greater scale, where exactly and how long, I will leave to the professionals.
