Why K-Pop Idol Beauty Standards Shouldn’t Be Emulated

The K-Beauty has exploded within the last few years, thanks to the popularization of Korean media, from K-dramas to K-Pop. Understandably, with how popular its gotten, more and more people are eager to emulate the looks of their favorite K-pop idols. But not every beauty trend is healthy, and just like with the western entertainment industry, the K-Pop industry has their fair share of bad practices.

K-Pop groups of both genders are known for their long legs, thin bodies, and youthful features. Oftentimes, people forget that many of these idols have undergone some type of plastic surgery to get these results. While plastic surgery isn’t necessarily bad, many idols and people hoping to enter into this industry have undergone these procedures younger and younger as the years go on.

However, it is the diet of these idols that have drawn some of the most criticism. K-Pop idols are notoriously known to be underweight due to intense industry standards. Many fans and industry executives expect these idols to be at or under a certain weight, leading to mandatory diets. Some K-pop idols have been known to only eat an apple or collagen packets to keep themselves filled.

These dangerous eating habits have been picked up by many eating disorder communities online, leading to more kids falling into these bad habits. The K-Pop industry doesn’t have to stay this way; in fact, there are many idols today who are speaking out on the many issues plaguing the industry. Fans shouldn’t be pressured not to openly discuss these bad practices, and instead keep this conversation alive to help young fans and future K-pop idols who want to be a part of the industry.
