Why Is Moana Getting a Remake?

Disney is no stranger to recreating and reimagining their original and classic works for modern-day audiences.  Taking such classics like “Cinderella” (1950), “The Jungle Book” (1967), and “101 Dalmatians” (1961), Disney has recently been on a progressive trend of remaking their old movies in an attempt to capture the hearts, love, and, of course, money from modern audiences.  And it does not seem like Disney will be slowing down anytime soon with the recent release of the new “Moana” (2026) trailer.

While I have no problem with remaking movies, the original “Moana” (2016) film has no reason to be remade.  Unlike the previous films I have listed, like “Cinderella” (1950) and “The Jungle Book” (1961), the original “Moana” film was released recently.  To compare the two “Moana” films, the remake and the original only have a decade of difference in age, which is not a big passage of time.  Especially since Disney previously released a sequel to the original “Moana” film in 2024, “Moana 2”, the market is not starved for more installments.

But apparently, Disney thinks we still need more Moana. Due to be released sometime in 2026, Disney dropped the new trailer for the film last week, and let’s say, people are not excited about it.  Citing how repetitive and exhausted the franchise is, many people have said that they have had enough of Moana and remakes in general.  Others have decided how cheap and artificial the trailer looks, which I must agree with.  As Moana is a very fantastic world, it will take a lot of CGI and green screens to even try to capture the same essence of the original. Do I think the film will hold a candle to the original? Let’s just say I won’t be holding my breath.
