Kid Cudi is Far Too Underrated

Is it just me, or is everyone waiting for their invitation to Honolulu just to—according to Kid Cudi, get that Maui Wowie? To be honest, I had no idea what that meant at first, but after tying together some context clues and common sense, I think I can confidently say that I know exactly what Kid Cudi was talking about in his song Maui Wowie. Kid Cudi has always been an artistic genius in my eyes, and while he’s been a part of the industry for several years, he has failed to receive the proper recognition that he deserves.

When we look back at popular artists over the years, we typically hear names like Drake, Kanye West, Jay-Z, J. Cole—–but we almost never hear the name Kid Cudi. What’s most bizarre is that Kid Cudi has been around since 2008, and has released hit singles like his iconic Day n’ Nite (2008) and Pursuit of Happiness (2009), and yet the artist has still not received his flowers for all of the hard work and dedication that he’s put into the industry.

Kid Cudi is another master of poetry that fell under the radar. The song Day n’ Nite serves as a perfect example of how Cudi lyricizes deep and intense emotions to convey his innermost thoughts and feelings. The entire song feels like a galactic enigma lit by stars that reflect his deepest and most personal conflicts. The infamous chorus emphasizes the polarity of his mind as it experiences thoughts that exist on two different ends of the spectrum. Through the day, the feelings of loneliness intensify, and he feels that he has no one, while at night, he finds tranquility and peace through his own self-reflection. Cudi does a magnificent job of conveying his personal and internal struggles through a metaphorical lens. The song touches heavily on feelings of isolation and showcases his ability to express the battle that exists within his mind in a bit of a catchy and captivating way—and to think that the song gained popularity on MySpace is an even more bizarre fact that makes the entire story even more inspiring!

Other songs like Mr. Rager, Ghost!, and Man on the moon also give listeners a first glimpse of the lyrical talent that Kid Cudi possesses. Cudi has had several hit songs that have made manyl people a fan of his work.

Overall, Kid Cudi has helped paved the way for artists to convey poetry through song. His lyrics run quite deep—sometimes—and show off his incredible versatility as both a songwriter and performer. He shows how he converts his vulnerability into magic and inspires people through his own storytelling. The music star, at one point, reached high levels of popularity—but it feels like throughout his lengthy career, he never really got the credit that he deserved.
