Is Nike on the Decline?

After years and years of gaining massive success through several different styles and designs—even down to a Cinnamon Toast Crunch inspired collaboration with Kyrie Irving—Nike could potentially experience a slight drop in sales in the coming months. It is reported that the popular shoe brand will have a 2%-4% decline in numbers, and is projected to drop a small percentage over the remainder of the year. Now, we can’t inherently tie this decrease in numbers to brand performance as many factors including economic concerns and international competition play a major role in the waning sales—but we can take a look at the structural design of the shoe and how it has transformed over the years to gain insight on whether these changes in design have any contribution to Nike’s subtle drop.

Which brings us to the worst Nike shoe design of 2025—-the Dirty Triple White Nike Air Force 1’s. While the vision is there and the execution is on point, the concept just didn’t seem to land too well with today’s sneakerheads. In all honesty, everyone hates getting a fresh pair of Air Force 1’s creased and dirty, so the idea of paying over $100 for a pair that’s already worn down and beaten up does seem a bit ludicrous. Not too many people want to rock a pair of shoes that resemble those of a 3rd-grader fresh off of the playground during recess. The dingy look was a unique and clever idea, but the idea didn’t land too well as most consider the design one of the worst of recent releases.

Not to mention that Nike completely lost their minds after releasing the Nike Cactus Plant Flea Market “Overgrown” Version back in late 2022. The shoe design looks so comical that I almost want to buy a pair just so I can make my friends laugh. This design failed to check any of the boxes, and it honestly settled any fear of the Grinch stealing Christmas considering that it looks like his remains were left on the actual shoe itself. Some ideas need to be left as just an idea, and this design is a perfect example of a concept that should have remained in Nike’s vault.

But with any company, there will be hits and there will be misses. Nike certainly has more hits than misses, and the company remains highly successful. External threats have played a role in its very minute drop in sales, but the company will be just fine as it remains a hot commodity in both the sports and fashion world.
