Online influencers have become the biggest entry points for the average person within American politics. While this was quickly adopted by conservatives and the Republican Party, the Democratic Party has struggled with this for years. In the past year, the Democrats have been more eager to, in some way, emulate how their opposition party collaborates with influencers online. The most notable being, looking for an influencer to be a liberal Joe Rogan.
This has led them to collaborate with many influencers, and more recently with one of the most well-known leftist influencers online, Hasan Piker. Unfortunately, it didn’t go the way they were all expecting. While there are similarities between Republican influencers and their opposite counterparts, there are far more differences. Hasan Piker revealed this reality due to his being far more radical than the average politician within the Democratic Party.
Republican influencers are often more ready to unite with other party members despite the many differences they may have. However, influencers like Hasan are more than willing to not work with politicians if they don’t agree with certain views. It’s a fact that is not only reflected in other leftist influencers but also in the emerging democratic and left-leaning voter base within younger generations.
The elections of Zohran Mamdani and James Talerico reflect the reality that more young people are looking for politicians for progressive policies that typical corporate democrats are likely to put aside. Hasan Piker is representative of this growing population of voter and as the years go on, its looking less likely that it will go away. The Democratic Party needs to reckon with itself, whether those within the establishment are willing to adapt to these changes or step aside for newer politicians to fill these roles.
