Why NYC’s Soccer Streets Program Should Be A Permanent Fixture

A new school soccer program is enticing interest in the sport within New York City schools ahead of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. The program, Soccer Streets, was launched by Mayor Mamdani on Monday and will travel to 50 participating schools across the five boroughs.

Each stop will give students a fun event similar to field days, transforming streets outside of the schools into soccer pitches and a variety of other fun activities for people to enjoy. The program is partnered with the nonprofit Street Lab and the Chobani brand for funding.

This is the latest initiative from NYC DOT’s Open Streets for Schools program, which aims to give schools access to streets for various outdoor activities, and they have proven to be quite popular. Soccer Streets, in particular, can be a great opportunity to give kids more access to the sport than they already have outside of class.

Soccer is one of the many sports that have risen in popularity amongst younger generations, thanks to interest on social media and easier access to soccer games in the United States. This interest has unsurprisingly led to more children wanting to be able to play in their own areas. Unfortunately, many of these kids are finding it hard to play, due to how few opportunities exist for them. Programs like Soccer Streets give kids who are interested in soccer an avenue to try it out.

While it is great promotional material for the World Cup, NYC residents deserve to have free and accessible activities that can be used for everyone, and programs like these could easily be used outside of major sporting events.
