On September 5, 2026, in the first week of the College Football season, the Michigan Wolverines and the Western Michigan Broncos faced off. It was a low-scoring game, with the Wolverines winning 13-12. But there’s a big catch that came alongside this win for the Wolverines, as the game had a major controversial ending with a majority of people believing that the Western Michigan Broncos were actually heavily robbed.
Down 12-7, Michigan proceeded to overthrow a Hail Mary, leading to an incompletion with the game clock at 0:00, so it should be game over; WMU wins. But the refs deemed that there was actually just a mere 1 second left on the clock, giving the Wolverines another chance at a Hail Mary, which this time was a completed catch for a lead-taking touchdown.
The catch? The clock hit 0:00 while the ball was still in the air, meaning it should be impossible for there to even be an extra second since no one touched the ball when the game clock actually reached 0:00.
So if everyone else in the world(excluding biased Michigan fans who want their team to win) sees that the game was over and WMU was screwed out of an upset win, what exactly did the referees see?
Over the last decade across all the major sports, refereeing has been placed under a lot of scrutiny from sports fans, as yes, the referees uphold the rules and safety of the sports they ref for, but over the recent years the amount of controversial calls and clear wrong decisions in sports games has skyrocketed to amounts that for many fans these sports and games due to the refereeing have become unwatchable.
These constant negative ideas around referees having clear biases and screwing games for several reasons, mixed with the commissioners of these leagues being in constant defense of these referees’ decisions, is a complete negative on the leagues themselves, lowering viewership numbers, merch sales, and turning many fans against the sports altogether.
I truly believe these horrible referee jobs need to be held to a level of accountability, instead of the league just simply posting letters of post-game reports saying they got it wrong days later that no longer have value or change anything. If something isn’t done and these problems with referees continue to grow in consistency, it will lead only to bigger problems across all sports leagues.
