The Trump administration has fixated on a variety of issues since its second term. That said, a surprising amount of focus has been pushed onto college sports. It’s not that the attention is unwarranted, but like any other issue the administration has tackled, concerns around fiscal expenses are the leading reason they’ve put out when concerning their increasing prioritization of the issue.
According to The White House, college sports, particularly under the NCAA, are an unregulated mess. In particular, the constant bidding wars for prospective players have led to a supposed image problem that the administration is seeking to rectify. However, like any other issue the administration has tackled, criticism has risen, with many alleging the administration has alternative motives for this focus.
College sports, especially in areas of the country that have a heavy focus on this type of industry, have an incredible political and societal influence in shaping the future careers of professional athletes. Many critics see the safeguards the Trump administration intends to install as helping everyone else but the student-athletes.
This would lead college sports and student athletes to be tied to politics more than ever before, which could lead to the federal government controlling this industry in ways that help them and not student athletes.
College athletes should be protected, and the industry safeguarded to prevent future problems. That said, these fixes should never come at the cost of whatever strings partnering with the federal government will likely give them.
