Anticipation was high for the New York Knicks’ third game in the Eastern Conference against the Spurs. However, the announcement of Trump’s attendance at the game seemed to put a damper on the massive amount of hype that had been building.
However, it wasn’t just the hype that Trump’s visit killed; the free events NYC mayor Mamdani had announced for that particular game night had to be canceled in order to comply with the Secret Service and for the protection of the president. While understandable, this visit certainly did President Trump no favors in gaining any favorability in the city that he used to call home.
While the cancellation of the free viewing events due to his security detail was a problem, many more New Yorkers gained even more irritation at how Trump acted throughout the game. For many, he seemed bored and even fell asleep at times; all these behaviors and more only made people angrier.
So when the Knicks eventually lost the game, people were quick to blame President Trump. It’s a stretch for sure, but even before the game, many people online and even some sports anchors were promising that if the Knicks lost, the blame would be thrown at Trump.
Simply put, New Yorkers’ disdain for the man follows decades and decades of living through the multitude of problems that Trump would dish out within New York City and even New Jersey, whether it be through his business or the comments he has made about people.
The best thing Trump could have done was not show up at all.
