Releasing in theaters on Friday, 26, 2026, the film “Supergirl” (2026) has finally made it to audiences. After the smashing hit of “Superman” (2025), fans waited in great anticipation to see how the new film would follow up and if it could possibly measure up! And now that a few reviews are in, many fans and critics have shared their thoughts on this new film. And the general consensus is…. Meh?
Despite the buzz to see the film, many fans and critics have cited that the film sadly falls short in a few very important aspects of the film. With a 58% rating by Rotten Tomatoes, many people were disappointed by the overall script and direction of the film. In many reviews, fans and critics alike have cited how the film seemed studio-driven and not exactly a passion project. Where “Superman” succeeded in bringing people together and delivering hope, “Supergirl” felt like a manufactured cash-grab by studio executives.
Now, while I did not see the film myself, I do believe these criticisms hold weight when discussing the film. From the trailer, I was not at first grabbed by the premise. While there is tension in Supergirl needing to save her dog, I was not a fan of the fact that she was paired up with another character during her journey. This could be because I do not read the comics, but I was initially put off when I realized this would be a big plot point in the film. Especially since this type of plot point has been done to death in cinema.
However, with my initial thoughts aside, I do think this film is worth seeing! Ever since last summer, I have been so excited to see this new film, and I do not want to be swayed by the critics. It’s time for girls to see themselves as the hero in their own lives. Could “Supergirl” be that representation? I think so! Look out, theaters for “Supergirl”!
