One particular show has taken the world by storm and somehow has made summer even hotter with each newly released episode. Showcasing young and beautiful singles as they try to search for love, this show has everyone seated as audiences watch contestants try to discover love in a luxury villa. Streaming exclusively on Peacock, the show of the summer that has everyone, including myself, talking about, if you haven’t already guessed, Love Island: USA. Or would a more appropriate title be Lust Island?
Luring in contestants with the promise of love, passion, and connection, many contestants are sadly let down when lust and sexual desires only arise between contestants. Instead of building true and genuine relationships, many contenders on the show are sadly let down when no romantic connections form.
However, I argue that this is by design from the producers. Only casting young and single people, the show makes a conscious effort to display solely conventionally attractive people who tend to fit within the socially acceptable standard of beauty. And when you factor in the fact that such contestants are only allowed to wear bathing suits, while competing in challenges that constantly push what can get past the TV sensors, then you basically have a recipe for a lustful televised disaster!
But that left me wondering, with everything happening in the show, where does that leave room for genuine love and connection to fit in?
Oh, right! Sex sells! And what sells more than young singles?
