The United States is nearing $40 trillion in national debt as of today. A figure that is so huge that not even the two richest people, Elon Musk and Larry Page’s net worth combined, can save the debt. That raises an important question: Can the country ever get out of it?
The answer is yes, but not through easy, quick fixes. America is unlikely to “pay off” its debt entirely. Instead, it must reduce the debt’s burden by growing the economy, controlling spending, and raising enough revenue to narrow persistent budget deficits.
Neither party has a complete solution. Deep spending cuts alone would be politically difficult because programs like Social Security, Medicare, and defense make up much of the federal budget. If we take these crucial programs out of the budget, this will put many Americans at risk of health and poverty.
Raising taxes alone could slow economic growth and put people on tight budgets. Lasting progress will require a combination of responsible spending, targeted tax reforms, and policies that encourage investment, innovation, and productivity.
The greatest danger is not the size of the debt itself but the cost of ignoring it. As interest payments consume a larger share of the federal budget, less money is available for infrastructure, education, research, and national security.
America has overcome major economic challenges before. It can manage this one as well, but only if elected leaders are willing to make difficult choices rather than postpone them. The longer the country waits, the more expensive those choices are likely to become.
