Everyone has songs that they absolutely love, and even whole albums that they can’t live without. They also probably have songs that, once they hear them on the radio or when they are listening to a playlist, no matter what, they would never skip.
When it comes to songs for me, it has to be either extremely nostalgic and remind me of something, or it needs to be deeply personal, that I relate to. It also can remind me of people, such as past relationships, friends, or romantic relationships, to make me not want to skip it.
One song that I can think of is “I Swear” by All-4-One. I remember driving to my grandpa’s house as a kid around the summer or Christmas time, and that song would come on, and now anytime I hear it, I think of that bumpy gravel road, and it puts a smile on my face.
Another song is a song called “Cold as Ice” by Foreigner which reminds me of most of my past relationships. If you listen to the lyrics, you can understand why. But then “Far Away” by Nickelback and the song “Hero” by Enrique Iglesias, makes me think of my first ever relationship and I just can’t bring myself to skip either song.
“The Sound of Silence” by Disturbed, always makes me think of when I saw Disturbed in concert. I was with friends, my first and only concert and when that song came on, it got dark, people turned on their lighters and the song just hit so much harder than I could ever understand.
Now when it comes to whole albums, I’d say anything from Linkin Park, before Chester Bennington passed away, I would never skip. Now even more than ever. I felt his pain and related to it and now more than ever it just hits so much harder.
Some songs are just simply nostalgic; some remind me of a love that could have been, and some make me think of who I have in my life now and the ones who are no longer there. Songs are so powerful and one of the best parts of self-expression!
