When you think of traditional sports, you think of young fans who were probably very influenced by older fans who are in their family or at least older people they happen to know. But when it comes to Esports, you don’t get many older fans. Mostly only young adults and maybe teenagers play Esports because the older generation doesn’t play video games that often.
Esports are getting more and more popular though because you can watch it in the comfort of your home and in your pjs with your favorite snacks. I think that the older generation probably doesn’t understand the technology of Esports and would rather play the games in real life than see pixelated versions of their favorite players.
As for the younger generation, it allows people who are bad at sports physically to be good at them virtually, and that helps their confidence because they can still say they are good at sports. When it comes to people like me, I played a lot of street basketball, an esports game, and I was very good at it. But in real life, I can’t play basketball well because of asthma and bad coordination. I was also really good at playing a street football game. These games have fewer rules than the real ones, which appeal to younger players. I would beat a friend of mine who was a few years younger than me, although he was not a fan of that.
I feel as though there is a decent sized generational gap between lovers of esports and traditional sports; you can get both generations to enjoy both types of sports. Encouraging the opposite generation to try the other one is never a bad thing, and maybe eventually there will not be such a giant gap between the two.
We can learn a lot about each from each generation and I think we can learn to respect each type of sport if we just try it and learn something new along the way.
