I never understood the hype of sports. People having huge parties for the Superbowl, World Series, or NBA Finals just to be yelling at the screen. Or maybe it’s not sitting in the comfort of your own home, maybe you are in the heat watching the games, among millions of fans.
The catch is when you know nothing about sports. If you go to a game, it’s mostly likely you were dragged to the game because your friend, sibling, parent, cousin or even child who is a huge fan of one of the teams playing and you want to support them by going. You can still enjoy it for them, even with the limited knowledge.
That’s about as much as I know about sports. Basic rules, higher score means you are winning (unless it’s golf) and that there will always be either an angry fan yelling about some penalty or someone proposing on the giant screen. Regardless of my lack of knowledge, I went to games to either support family or friends in high school. Something about going to games with people who you graduate with just makes the games better because you are not cheering for a team only, you are cheering for people you care about.
Now when I have family visits and they are talking about track meets and games that are coming up I end up tuning them out because when I talk about things that interest me they seem not interested even if they ask me but it also feels like they are asking just because and not because they care.
I went to a hockey game once and had no idea what the rules where, but what I did know what that it was a very violent sport, there was a silly thing called the hot box and sitting in the front you get to see people bash into the window that separates you from getting trampled by the player. I did get to ice skate afterwards which I had never done.
In the end, knowing or not knowing anything about sports isn’t what matters. Just support those around you.
