When I think of fashion, the first thing that comes to my mind is not supermodels. It’s characters from my favorite TV shows. When I think of hairstyles and what people wore in the 90s, my thought instantly goes to the shows F.R.I.E.N.D.S, Fresh Prince, That’s So Raven, and plenty of others. The characters of those shows changed their hair so often it was hard to keep track. Sometimes they had short hair, sometimes long hair, sometimes with bangs and sometimes without bangs.
What they wore changed a lot, too. For example, the character Chandler wore mostly vests and jeans, but later on, he started to wear glasses, his hair changed, and his personality changed a little too. During the 90s, when people chose what they wear, their favorite TV icons heavily influenced them. I would go to school and see people in baggy clothes or with hair like Phoebe or Racheal from Friends.
I’m not saying that everyone copied them, but I know it was popular. I mean, I even had my hair changed to look like P!ink’s. Even though she’s not a TV icon, she definitely had an influence over what people wore. I wasn’t very affected by fashion trends, but I did want Air Force 1s, and because I loved Tony Hawk, I wanted Etnies.
I know people wore the baby doll dresses from Reality Bites, preppy clothes from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and ultra-washed jeans that Uncle Jessie wore in Full House. These styles were all the rage in the 90s, and I think they are coming back now in 2026. I was really into flannel and camo and still am today. I prefer baggy clothes to anything tight-fitting or dresses because I am more of a tomboy.
I think that we will always seek out fashion tips from our favorite TV show characters because what we love about them is that they are characters. We love the characters much more than the actors/actresses.
