Should Governments Do More to Support Neurodivergent Adults?

Governments do a lot to help pregnant women, poor families and even people who are too disabled to work be able to have the funds to survive. What they don’t do though, is enough for adults with autism, adhd or other neurodivergent conditions. Not only do we need doctors who are specialized in treating those of us who have these conditions after we’ve been diagnosed, but we need help with getting jobs, shopping, transportation, just general everyday things.

I do realize that there are people who get special helpers but those people usually have income to pay for those, whether it be disability income or family help, not everyone has access to these things. For example I do not have someone who comes in and takes me to doctor appointments, my mom has to take me to those. When I lived alone, undiagnosed, I did not have help either. Even when living in disability housing.

What we need is a program that protects us, that helps us get the resources we need without costing a fortune. We need special housing for young adults with neurodivergent conditions like autism and adhd, and special transportation to aid them in everyday necessities. Also, as someone who has applied for disability, and has been denied several times, there should be much less requirements to be accepted and get the help that we need and deserve.

Governments spend so much money on passing acts and bills that don’t help much of the general public, like in my town, there are several banks being built, but disability support? There is none. Priority is on banks, restaurants and things that will bring more people into town to live, but that doesn’t help the people who already live there.

If we had more help in general, for everything from shopping, cleaning our living spaces and other things, it would make life a lot easier. I think the more people who have help, the better the future will be for everyone.
