So you are in you are a teenager and it’s the 90s and you are sitting on your couch watching Friends. You see all the crazy things they get into, and how they can just take off work to go to the beach, or London for a week and nobody cares. Then you get to your 20s and you realize something, being an adult sucks. They don’t show the characters struggling with bills, and trying to find a job, and just everyday life.
I know that the show does show how difficult relationships can be, but the likelihood of six friends and four of them getting together with each other, is not very likely. It actually made being in a relationship look very hard to deal with and that it usually ends up in heartbreak. I related to Chandler the most, because he uses humor when he is uncomfortable and I had to go through a lot of Janice(s) to find my Monica.
The characters seem to find jobs easily too, Racheal got basically the job of her dreams, Monica became a chef at her own restaurant, Joey got a major lead in a tv show, and Chandler got a great job as well. The only thing that seemed to like real life was the sad reality that sometimes two people in love, that want a child so badly, can’t have one of their own. I can relate to that that it always broke my heart seeing that part in the show.
What the show did get right though was that friendship is powerful, and even when you fight or argue, you find a way to make up and enjoy each other’s company again. True friendship is what made the show’s name so meaningful. It teaches you the lesson that when you have great friends, you hold on to them and never ever let go, because with friends, adulthood is a little more tolerable.
