With summer on its way out, the seasons are already showing signs of change. With the leaves beginning to turn yellow, that signals the coming autumn season and a popular trend that seems to recur every year without fail.
The trend, dubbed Christian Girl Autumn, originally started as a meme, poking fun at the basic white woman stereotype surrounding their curated and aesthetic enjoyment of fall and pumpkin-related products. Many of the memes shared used lifestyle blogger Caitlin Covington and her friend’s fall-themed photoshoots, who, when seeing the meme, reclaimed it and turned it into a legitimate trend.
While some still hop on the Christian Girl Autumn trend to make jokes or participate ironically, more and more people are using this trend to legitimately share their love for the fall season. For Americans in particular, it echoes nostalgic fashion trends and memories of the early 2000s and 2010s, and the seasonal events that many who live in areas where autumn is prevalent partake in, like pumpkin patches, apple picking, foliage tours, and pumpkin spice drinks.
For others, it is a great alternative celebration of autumn that is largely removed from Halloween, especially for religious people who don’t participate. Additionally, Christian Girl Autumn has a surprisingly large foothold within Gen Z, largely because of how progressive-leaning Caitlin Covington is, notably being very pro-LGBTQ+. This has made people feel comfortable participating in trends like this, especially during times when support for LGBTQ+ people has become crucial.
