The 2026 US Open began as an exciting experience for tennis fans within the United States and across the world. While millions flocked to watch the matches online and in person, unfortunately, much of the live experience was hampered by an unfortunate crowd of people in attendance. Online influencers aren’t uncommon for sporting events; sports have had a significant impact on the lives and careers of celebrities in general, especially in the age of social media.
Sports are one of the best places for influencers and any other entertainers to draw the eyes of the public towards them, to show off their status, advertise their business, and even network. That said, while it is considered normal, this year took a different turn, leaving many tennis fans annoyed or outright angry at their mere presence at the games.
Ultimately, the largest problem influencers had at the 2026 US Open was that they weren’t subtle. Complaints mounted from the crowd surrounding influencer attendees being loud enough that it disrupted player focus on the court, distracting people using bright ring lights while filming videos, and overall not following the typical etiquette expected at these events. This led to many questioning the Some pointed to the United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) US Open Content Creator Media Credential program and its way of vetting influencers as the source of the problem. However, ESPN and other sources noted that the influencers under the most fire weren’t affiliated with the USTA’s program.
Overall, for many people, they see that these influencers aren’t attending these events because they enjoy the sport, but that they only use these events as a way to gain more followers. That said, more and more sports industries are incorporating social media to draw interest from the younger generation. That said, there are definitely ways to improve how influencers are integrated into these spaces. More needs to be done by influencers in general to be respectful of the places that they enter.
