The Women’s National Basketball Association has seen an uptick in popularity in recent years, following the success of players like Caitlin Clark and viral highlight reels online. Unsurprisingly, this spike in popularity has brought in more fans and viewers; however, it has also brought more unruly fan behavior.
Across the internet and even within the physical game locations, people have noticed a rise in toxicity within the fanbases of teams and players within the WNBA. Fans have thrown objects onto the court, disrupted games through fights, or hurled abusive and discriminatory language at players from their opposing team.
No entertainment form is safe from a rowdy fanbase; that said, not everyone has the stomach or mental capacity to deal with the controversies that can come with that. However, the controversies that have come out from WNBA fan communities are not just hurting potential new fans but the players themselves.
The WNBA is still one of the fastest-growing sports industries in recent years, with viewership up by 21% in 2025 alone. With how toxic things have become, with the increased inflammatory behavior by fans, and the increased presence of culture war topics, like transgender athletes in female sports, that predictably bring in a specific political audience, that growth is being threatened.
While it might seem to be the case that the WNBA is feeling the effects of a rapidly growing industry, that doesn’t mean they should just let this ebb out naturally. Steps need to be taken to make the fans and players feel as safe as possible, and not let these harmful behaviors settle into the WNBA culture and become normalized.
