When people hear the soundtracks of video games who are not gamers they don’t consider it music, mostly because it has no lyrics. But when it comes to music in a video game it really sets the mood for the game and sound design can make all the difference in a game. If the game had no music at all, it would be a very different experience.
For example you can’t play Zelda without hearing the opening theme music, or remembering when you first learned Zelda’s Lullaby, or the creepy music you hear when you enter the shadow temple and without that music it would make the temple just boring. Or that scene when you have to help Minda get to the castle and it’s just an intense fast paced music track, and it makes you feel emotions for a character that you at first may not have liked but now you know you need to save her.
Or the pokemon games that have such iconic music that you are humming along and that instant creep factor once you are in Lavender Town and you don’t even have to see the town, you hear the music and know where you are.
Some games even have songs that have lyrics such as Kingdom Hearts and the song called Simple and Clean. You find yourself singing the song while watching the opening credits and it’s so nostalgic and I have even downloaded that song to my playlists because I love the song so much and it just brings back nostalgia of playing it in my high school days.
Another one of my favorite series is Persona, and those songs actually have lyrics. When you are walking around school, fighting in Tartrus or just walking around town there is a song playing and I can’t help but sing along with the music because it gets me pumped up for the game and makes it that much more enjoyable.
Music is important in all kinds of media, and video game music is no different.
