For years, sports fans have found different ways to interact with their favorite sports, teams, and players. They buy merch and jerseys, and even go as far as tattooing logos onto their bodies to show the dedication of fandom. More recent technology-based interactions include fantasy sports leagues and sports betting.
Fantasy Sports are online games where you build virtual teams using real professional athletes and score points based on their actual real-world game statistics; on the other hand, sports betting is the act of predicting the outcome of a sporting event and risking money on that prediction. These two are vastly different: fantasy sports leagues build community and strategic engagement over time, whereas sports betting commodifies every fleeting play into an immediate financial transaction that harms sports culture as a whole, damaging player-to-fan connections and taking away from the enjoyment.
There are several core differences between the two interaction styles, with Fantasy Sports Enriching Culture and betting diminishing it. The first major difference is the focus. Fantasy Sports focuses on strategy, player statistics, franchise changes, and what is known as having “ball knowledge”. Sports betting is completely different and is all about financial turnover, profits, and making a quick dollar.
Then there is the difference in social structure(s). Fantasy sports allows for social conversation amongst players engaging in the leagues, positive bragging rights, camaraderie, bonding, and the now infamous fantasy punishments that losers have to participate in. Yet, Sports Betting is self-centered, done in isolation, and is an individualistic style of financial risk.
Sports betting is a plague not just on sports leagues, but has become a casted shadow over youth, as well as people engaging in sports betting don’t even realize they have become addicted. As well as leading to constant harassment and dehumanization of athletes. Compared to Fantasy Sports, which fosters community, promotes knowledge and learning while rewarding careful research and critical thinking skills.
These differences truly show how negative sports betting is in absolute terms, especially when compared to something as positive and great such as Fantasy Sports.
