When you are a low income family and your child wants to play a sport you want to let them do that but sometimes those community sports cost a lot of money. Now I understand that a small fee is needed to supply uniforms, and other equipment but I don’t think that it’s the responsibility of the parent to pay for that. Most likely that sport is being funded by the city. They make money at the games and for concessions that people buy so why make the parents buy the uniform?
I think at most they can let low income families have a sliding fee for being able to be on the team. I also think that tryouts should be free because if they are not good enough for the team then they shouldn’t have to pay the entry fee to be told that they didn’t make the team. It wouldn’t be fair if only certain families were able to play the sport.
I don’t even think for community sports there should be tryouts; there should just be kids who join the team and it doesn’t matter if they are good or bad at the sport. Sports are meant to be fun and they shouldn’t be competitive unless they are in middle school or high school and it’s school sports. Community sports shouldn’t be competitive.
Low income families deserve the same opportunities that someone who has a lot of money does. Usually it’s not the fault of the family that they are low income. I think it also would be good if they have an opportunity for the parents to be the coach so they can have more involvement. In the end community sports whether it be soccer, baseball, hockey, basketball or football the child should be having fun being able to play with friends from their community.
A parent shouldn’t have to tell their child that they can’t play a sport because it costs too much. Especially during the summer, every kid deserves a chance to play a sport.
