You Don’t Have to Finish Every Book You Start

Even avid readers can stop reading a book if they find that it just doesn’t interest them. I am an avid reader myself, and when I love a book, I tend to finish it in a few days and then on to the next one. But there are books that I’ve started that I couldn’t even force myself to finish. The story was boring, or it was a slow start, and the characters were not interesting. Sometimes I simply avoid an author because I know their writing style just isn’t for me.

There is one particular author, who is loved in the psychological thriller genre, that I started reading one of her books, to see what the hype was, and I was bored. I couldn’t even get through the first chapter. Slow burns are killers unless you love them, and they can make the book a bore if you don’t.

Classics are another one for me. I know that everyone loves books like Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, Wuthering Heights; the list goes on and on, but for me, those were torture to have to read in school. A book about burning books- why would that be interesting? And the only books with animals that talk in it I like are ones like Charlotte’s Web or Stuart Little, and to be honest, I don’t even know what Wuthering Heights is even about.

I seem to like ones that are not well known or, if they’re well known, it’s not until I’ve found them; it’s like the hidden gems come out of hiding after I’ve found them. But then the popular ones, the ones everyone loves, I just can’t get into, and then it becomes another book in the unfinished pile. But that’s the thing: you don’t have to finish everything you start. You don’t have to feel bad that you stopped reading; whatever book you didn’t finish, that is okay. Just know, you’re no less of a reader if you do.
