Bio: Hala Swelam is an international student from Egypt at Arizona State University, majoring in Communications. College encouraged her interest in writing. Hala is passionate about movies, music, history, and culture, in addition to her adult life being jump started by her transition away from home. Tennis: When Sports and Popular Culture Meet

Ten years ago, I was playing tennis competitively, and because I was very into it, and subconsciously as a kid loved media and popular culture. I started looking into who was famous at the time and the narrative surrounding them.
Fast forward, now that I am out of my tennis phase I am seeing that the players who I used to follow religiously are retiring one after the other. Maybe that’s a good thing, because now they are leaving space for new faces to grow.

North Korea Fires Missile Over Japan for First Time Since 2017

North Korea launched a missile over Japan for the first time in five years, raising tensions over Kim Jong Un’s nuclear program and prompting Tokyo to issue a rare public safety warning.
The missile, which was launched on Tuesday, splashed down in the Western Pacific about 3,200 kilometers east of Japan, according to Tokyo officials, who added that there were no reports of damage. The launch was condemned by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol warned of a “resolute response.”

Ibrahim Mansour, one of 20 survivors of one of the deadliest boat accidents in the Eastern Mediterranean, says he can’t forgive himself for failing to save others while speaking from a hospital bed while still in shock.

California Employers are Required to List Salary Ranges in Job Postings, According to New Law

Legislators in California approved a measure that requires employers to include salary ranges with job postings in the state in order to encourage pay equity.
The bill, SB 1162, “would require an employer with 15 or more employees to include the pay scale for a position in any job posting” and “would require businesses to include median and mean hourly rates for each combination of race, ethnicity, and sex within each job category” in their pay data reports to the state.
