On August 7th, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion released a new song and music video called “WAP”. Their explicit lyrics and suggestive visuals became the topic of discussion within the first hour of its release. While many women found the song very catchy and empowering, this fun song soon turned into a topic of debate. Many men started to criticize the music saying that it was overly sexual and a bad influence for young girls. However, women were quick to defend the female rappers pointing out the double standards in the music industry. This debate further proved that female rappers are held at a higher standard and are criticized for rapping about some of the exact same things that male rappers speak on. Male rappers are never called out about their music or lyrics when talking about drugs, sex, and women.
Regardless of the debate, the song is now chart-topping, reaching #1 on Billboard’s Top 100 list as of today. The song has a catchy hook and a cool beat that will make you want to bounce with the bass of the song. This song will be on my playlist when I am feeling myself when getting ready for a night out with my girlfriends. Cardi B and Meg never disappoint when it comes to female empowerment and their songs restore confidence for women everywhere. I can say for myself no one can tell me anything when I am listening to this song or any song by the rap divas, because the music always makes me feel like a baddie!
