This morning, I stumbled upon a viral video of Obama. He was talking about how the Titan submersion is a horrible event but how there was a horrible Greek Boat Tragedy that no one was talking about and that it needs to be shared as well. The obvious question was: What is this Greek Boat Tragedy Obama is referring to?
The Viral Video I Saw This Morning
After extensive research, I finally found enough information to write about the Greek Boat Tragedy for the present readers who are eager to know just like I was.
Barack Obama said on Thursday at a speaking conference held by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation in Athens on Thursday, “We can’t ignore it.
“You think about what’s happening this week. There is a potential tragedy unfolding with the submarine that is getting, you know, minute-to-minute, coverage, all around the world.
“And you know it’s understandable because we all want and pray that those folks are rescued.
“But the fact that that’s got so much more attention than 700 people who sank,” the crowd began to applaud at this, realizing where Obama was going with his sentence.
He added: “That’s an untenable situation.”
The story begins with an overloaded fishing boat with a capacity for only 400 passengers, yet 700 people managed to occupy the boat before setting off on it’s journey.
350 Pakistanis were on this boat seeking to flee to Europe due to the bad economic state that Pakistan has been in for the past few months.
Also aboard were people from Egypt and Syria.
These factors led the boat to sink about 50 miles from the southern Greek town of Pylos.
Pakistan said they had arrested multiple human traffickers and their agents who told authorities that a ringleader was present and based in Libya.
The smugglers had charged a pretty penny ($8000 a person) for a seat on the boat illegally heading to Europe after flying to Dubai, Egypt, and Libya.
A high level of inquiry is in place to identify and arrest those involved in the human smuggling that has taken place according to Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah.
Sanaullah added that Pakistan is also working to recommend amendments to the law to plug loopholes and ensure conviction in such cases.
He added that not a single human trafficker has been affected in over five years, bringing up that this is mostly due to victims’ families agreeing to pardons in exchange for money.
