I Avoid Political Conversations—Here’s Why

If a conversation is about politics, it’s going to lead to arguments, and people usually have a strong opinion about one side or the other, which will lead to disagreements and usually end badly. Politics can create so much drama, and the result can sometimes lead to friendships or even relationships ending. I try to avoid bringing up topics like abortion, guns, or the legalization of weed because people never seem to see eye to eye about some topics, and it’s never an agree-to-disagree result.

I have strong views on topics, but usually keep them to myself because I don’t want to cause arguments that I can avoid. I have family members who are set in their beliefs, and I believe in the exact opposite of them. I’ve seen posts on social media where celebrities are for something controversial, like supporting trans rights, and the comments you see are so hateful because that is what people do: they hate things that they do not understand or believe in. As soon as you disagree with them, they act as if you insulted them for having a different opinion.

I know that if I had a conversation with anyone I disagree with, it would end badly. For example, I am very lbgt+ supportive, and I would defend their rights and be on their side, but I know if I did it publicly, I would get attacked by people who hate them and call them a sin or worse. I avoid arguments if I can because they make me uncomfortable and lead to hurt feelings and damaged relationships. I can barely get people to understand asexuality without being called fake or prude.

I also have very strong feelings about abortion and don’t believe it should be legalized. My beliefs are split between the two sides. I am not more right or more left. I don’t feel like I have a voice when I voice my opinions on social media, and ultimately feel as though everyone would disagree with me no matter what I say. I hope one day, people will be less combative and see it from a different perspective.
