Johnson & Johnson Recalls 5 of its Popular Sunscreen Sprays

On Wednesday, Johnson & Johnson announced that they would be recalling five of their popular spray-on sunscreen products. It includes all sizes and all available SPF levels and will take effect nationally. They listed the following aerosol sunscreen products:

Aveeno Protect + RefreshNeutrogena Beach DefenseNeutrogena Invisible Daily DefenseNeutrogena Ultra Sheer, and Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport.

The recall comes following the discovery of benzene, a chemical which causes cancer after repeated long-term exposures, in samples of the products. The company is working on identifying how the carcinogen made its way into the products, as it is not an ingredient used to make the sunscreen. They said in their official statement:

“Daily exposure to benzene in these aerosol sunscreen products at the levels detected in our testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences… Out of an abundance of caution, we are recalling all lots of these specific aerosol sunscreen products.”

Those who are in possession of these products were advised to stop using them. The company also shared that those who purchased the recalled sunscreens can get their refund by calling the J&J Consumer Care Center at 1-800-458-1673.
