King Charles’ Speech at Canadian Parliament Says More About British-Canadian Relations Than Meets the Eye

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, King Charles addressed Canadian citizens, supporting their sovereignty amidst Trump’s claims that he wants to annex the United States’ northern neighbors. This will mark the king’s first visit to Canada as the head of state. Trump’s repeated threats to annex Canada are what prompted Carney to invite Charles to deliver the speech instead of the king’s Canadian representative, the governor-general, who would usually speak on his behalf.

The king’s appearance in Canada is a reminder of the relationship between Canada and Britain, one that has been built over years and one that remains strong, and hints that whatever relationship Canada and the US had before is gone, according to Axios. Charles’ address means more symbolically since it’s his first visit as head of state. The king’s address is the third time in history that the British monarch delivered the opening speech to Canada’s parliament, with both times previously being done by the king’s mother and predecessor, Queen Elizabeth II.

In his speech, King Charles noted that Canada is strong without the help of any foreign powers, hinting at the ongoing tariff wars between Canada and the United States. Prime Minister Carney has also asserted that the US and Canada’s relationship has changed permanently, as he puts new boundaries in place to protect his country. His actions reflect the priorities of many Canadians who saw Carney’s election as a referendum on their country as well as US-Canada relations.
