The controversy surrounding data centers has grown more tense, and those in favor are doing all that they can to try to move public opinion towards them in a more favorable direction. A shining example of this new direction is the growing partnership between trade unions and the tech companies dominating the artificial intelligence industry.
It’s hardly surprising, considering the number of union jobs on the rise in the building of these data centers. Additionally, trade unions offer AI companies a perfect avenue for combating the criticisms thrown at data centers, aiming to foster trust in crowds that are pro-business and others who are focused on helping construction workers find stable work.
However, while these partnerships seem like a match made in heaven, many worry that they may do more harm than good to the overall reputation of unions within this country. For some, aligning with AI companies is like signing a deal with the devil.
While it is true that the building of these data centers will employ a large swath of workers, many tend to forget that these jobs are temporary. Additionally, when these data centers are complete, the increase in job numbers that they often reassure people with is typically far too low to actually improve the local economy.
To the growing crowd that is fiercely against these data centers being built, this collaboration makes the participating unions seem like they’re focused on short-term profit rather than the lingering consequences data centers could cause to their local communities.
