The months leading up to the upcoming 2026 midterms have been quite tense, and the ongoing primaries and special elections have been no better. The climate the Trump administration has fostered has created around politics has been a nightmare scenario for many, on both sides of the Republican and Democratic parties. It’s led to both parties seeking voter participation harder than ever before, and what better avenue to showcase this effort than through advertisements.
Recently, political advertisements have become some of the most important factors in swaying a person to the voting booth, be it for politicians or measures that strike at the heart of voting rights and more. This is due to being within a time when many voters don’t necessarily do much research into the things being voted on. Of course, this varies with age, education, and economic status; some people are far too busy with work and other tasks to do the effective research needed. But these advertisements do take a toll and can cause serious damage when used effectively.
The ads surrounding the recent Virginia and Louisiana voting referendum have been the latest shining example of these ads at work. Whether it be in ad breaks between sports games, movies, or TV episodes, millions noticed the ads urging voters to vote against the amendments the democrats were pushing. While Republicans and any other organization are well within their rights to make ads like these, what they shouldn’t do is to allegedly be boldly spreading lies about what these referendums are for.
Many viewers have noted the ads painting the sole blame on Democrats for the constant gerrymandering battles across the country, leaving out the fact that both parties are active participants. Others online have alleged that these ads specifically target the black population, misleading them that by voting no, they would be preventing their voting rights from being stripped away.
Its increadibly worrying, especially when you consider how far behind the Democratic party is in the advertising space. Republicans have had a well-oiled and funded media machine for years now, and it has served them well. Democrats can’t hope to close the gap if they don’t find some way to put out counter-messaging and effectively dispel these claims to the masses.
