The legal drinking age became 21 in 1984, and to argue that Congress used its power to withhold highway funding from any state that did not comply with this. I know plenty of people who would want the age to be 18 or even lower, and some people like me who would like it even higher, for example, at age 25.
Just because someone can vote, smoke, and marry at the age of 18 doesn’t mean we should let people who are barely out of high school be able to drink. That can lead to a lot of reckless driving, unplanned pregnancies, or even worse. I understand people will do it regardless, because of the thrill of doing something illegal or something, but lowering it to 18 would be a huge mistake.
Now at 25, they say that we have a fully developed brain, and we can also get insurance. Why can’t we raise the drinking age, which affects the way we think, to the age of 25? I realize that this would lead to protests, maybe even riots, but it would be harder for teenagers to sneak it. 21 year olds would’t be able to buy it for their underage friends or family members. It wouldn’t stop 25-year-olds from doing it, but I believe that if they raised it, it would make teenagers less likely to try to break the law.
I know that there are even places that let anyone of any age come in without an ID and get alcohol, and they are letting 16-year-olds come in and buy it for younger teenagers, and it’s just not right or safe for anyone. If a 16-year-old gets in a wreck and kills someone while under the influence, should they be charged as an adult? I think yes. Whoever bought the drinks should also get charged. I don’t think just because they are tempted to it, and do it underage, they shouldn’t be treated as adults, especially if they want to act like adults. Drinking be raised to 25 would save more lives than hurt.
