New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani announced his newest housing plan Tuesday morning. According to NYC.GOV, Mamdani’s Block by Block: The Housing Plan for a New Era aims to tackle the housing policy, construction, tenant protections, homeownership, and more. This plan outlines the Mamdani administration’s goals for tackling the ongoing housing shortage plaguing the city and implementing protections to preserve and build new housing, all in the name of making NYC affordable for working people.
“New York doesn’t work without housing that’s affordable,” said Housing Commissioner Dina Levy. “Block by Block is an ambitious vision for a more affordable city — balancing multiple priorities including production, preservation, and targeted enforcement — so New Yorkers can access the housing they deserve.”
According to the plan, the city aims to build 200,000 new affordable homes and preserve an additional 200,000 homes over the next decade, which is backed by a $22 billion capital investment. Additionally, it also plans to completely overhaul how the city responds to building violations and aims to take a proactive approach, through planning efforts to address persistent issues around housing quality, public health, and economic inequality in boroughs hit the hardest, like the Bronx.
The Mamdani administration also aims to implement the Construction Justice Act, which establishes benefit standards and a $ 40-per-hour minimum wage for construction workers on City projects, centering workers in New York’s future.
“….We are setting the most ambitious housing production and preservation targets in the city’s modern history – and backing them up with investments to match – while also protecting tenants and homeowners, investing in public housing and ensuring the workers building that housing have good-paying, safe jobs.” said Mayor Mamdani to the press. “ We must fight for both the tenants of today and the tenants of tomorrow. Block by Block shows how New York City can do exactly that.”
