Fans of the internationally beloved medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” (2005) were treated to a pleasant surprise last Friday when ABC dropped an existing teaser trailer for the upcoming 20th season!
“How long do I have to wait?” says the titular character Meredith Grey in the first clip of the 30-second action-packed teaser. The actress behind the iconic character of Meredith Grey, Ellen Pompeo, had already told us she was not leaving the show for good, but would instead see a much more reduced involvement in the series.
Many fans already had a glimpse into the changes to story arcs, leading to less screentime from beloved Dr. Grey amidst Pompeo’s departure from the show as a series regular last season. Complete with a farewell episode and a guest appearance during season 19’s finale, audiences may have caught on to the idea of seeing less of Ellen, which is why it was a pleasant surprise to see her come back so quickly.
“It’s a little bit of trickery, because I’m not completely gone. Actually, the storyline is very cool. There’s a lot of real research that’s changing very rapidly about Alzheimer’s disease and about what they believe is the cause of Alzheimer’s disease. It’s pretty controversial. So Meredith’s character left to go to Boston because her daughter needed to go to a special school. I will be making some appearances hopefully next year, if I can find some time”, said Ellen Pompeo about her relationship with Meredith and Grey’s Anatomy moving forward via screenrant.com last year.
On Pompeo’s participation this season costar Debbie Allen (Dr. Catherine Fox) had this to say viadigitalspy.com: “She’s in the first episode, and she’s in the one I’m going to direct. We have to let her go and do some other things, but she’s still our queen. She’s still our number 1 on the call sheet.”
With season 20 expected to have only 10 episodes, it will be an interesting dynamic to see how writers resolve plotlines and gracefully involve the character of Meredith Grey in a short window of time. After all, this is the smallest amount of episodes since season 1 (9 episodes), and it is most likely due to the strikes across the entertainment industry last year, so we can’t wait to see how the team behind the iconic show tackles the challenge this season. Lots of expectations for season 20!
